Worked example

Worked example: a new family-law boutique, the divorce cost question, and the fixed-fee page that answers it

A worked example, labelled as one: no family-law client is published here yet. The practice is a composite of the family pages we audited for the family page on this site; the plan is what we would do; the results are expectations, marked as such. Family law is not among the services for which the transparency rules require published prices, which is exactly why a practice that publishes them stands out.

The starting point: two solicitors who left a larger firm, a site that explains the divorce process in careful prose and says nothing about what anything costs, and a Search Console that shows the practice name and “divorce solicitors [town]” at position 40.

The page

Divorce costs, said plainly, with what is fixed and what is not

The fixed fee for the application

A figure for handling an uncontested application from start to final order, what it includes, and the court fee stated separately with a link to GOV.UK for the current amount, because it changes and the page should not.

The finances, honestly

That a financial order is separate, that a consent order has a fixed fee where the terms are agreed, and that contested finances are charged by the hour with the rate and a realistic range for the common situations.

Children, carefully

That arrangements for children are a separate matter, what mediation involves and when it is required before court, and the fee for the first meeting.

The first call

A fixed-fee first appointment with what it covers, or a free one if the practice chooses, stated as a figure and a length of time. The person searching at midnight needs to know what ringing costs.

Who you will speak to

The two solicitors by name, their qualifications, their accreditations, and a sentence from each about how they work. A family client is choosing a person for the worst year of their life.

What the page does not do

It does not promise outcomes, timescales it cannot control, or that anything is simple. The honesty is the point and it is what the reviews later mention.

What we would expect, labelled as expectation

First for the cost question, because almost nobody answers it

“Divorce cost UK” is searched 2,900 times a month and the first page is national guides and comparison sites; a practice page that answers it with its own figures competes for the town version within weeks on an established domain, and the fixed-fee passage is the one the AI assistants quote when someone asks what a divorce costs. The near-me search is decided by the Google profile and its reviews, and a profile whose reviews mention the fixed fee and the solicitor by name wins it.

The measure is first appointments booked from the page, which the booking form counts, and the honesty of the page is measured by the reviews a year later.

How to read this page

 • The practice is a composite; no firm is named, described or implied.
 • Fees are illustrative; the point is that a figure is published with what it includes. Nothing here is legal advice.
 • The results are expectations, labelled as such; the measure is first appointments booked from the page.
